LETTERS TO EDITOR

Mind your Urdu

It seems that come Pakistani TV channels are showing English films dubbed in Hindi. Some of these are meant for school children. Similarly there is the same problem with several important nature related programmes on cable channels.

Hindi is an expression of Indian Hindu nationalism, and year by year it is containing more and more non-Urdu words which are being deliberately introduced. India's Hindu leadership chose a non-Arabic script for this language strictly for religious reasons, and its introduction as language in Pakistan on children's TB is most unwelcome and completely outrageous. Hindi is no the language of Pakistan. To market it as Urdu dubbing is and unpardonable act.

Those who allowed this conduct need to be sent packing without a second thought.

Begum Bokhari

Naeem Bokhari was always a forgettable type until he stumbled upon this niche of contrived correspondence for the sake of posterity. It is a disgraceful and feigned outburst of powerful feelings against injustice and tyranny (apologies to Wordsworth for such citation). Mr. Bokhari's letter became the controversial basis of a much regretted reference against the Chief Justice and now a second letter, by a seemingly enraged Mrs. Bokhari, is a first class example of the infamous lawyer clinging to his wife's apron strings for salvation.

In the letter, Mrs. Bokhari clamours through affected notions of justice in order to rescue, “her mentor and her ideal,” who, according to her, is an epitome of, “wit, intellect, humour,” and many other nauseous adjectives available in her thesaurus!

However, I hope that such gibberish will find its way to the trashcan where it actually belongs and not spare her lord and master from a much deserved public thrashing. Sadly, a leading newspaper has wasted a front page column space by publishing this melodramatic verbosity which could easily have been replaced by an advertisement or perhaps some more news about Aunty Shamim and the self-righteous ninjas of Jamia Hafsa. Anyway, Mrs. Bokhari's adultion is as forgettable as her husband.

Passing gas

Until now, we were told that it's carbon dioxide  which is causing global warmng and the reason it's so essential to conserver energy for the planet to be saved. But now they have found that methane is the real culprit. There's not much we can do about reducing the emission of methane, except to kill living things like humans and cattle. We are already killing those humans known as Muslim, but to kill cows is against all norms of decency. India, of course can contribute a lot towards the reduction of methane in the atmosphere. All it has to do is to export the millions of cows it has to those who want them, thus easing the food shortage in the region and reducing global warming.

Cricket curse

The curse of match fixing in cricket is and offshoot of the Bombay and Sharjah bookie mafia, with some key former players performing the role of middle man. South Africa has also became the favorite hub of this mafia in the last decade. In the 90's, some bookies mainly from Karachi and a few from Lahore, joined hands with the Bombay mafia. Pakistan cricket has also suffered with some key players of the yesteryears, giving in to selfish base desire to make a fast buck. The stakes are very high with billions of rupees placed on bets for cricket matches. This illegal betting trade unfortunately enjoys the patronage of ruling elite in India and Pakistan. PCB must make no exception in allowing any player accused of involvement in match fixing, to be either directly or indirectly involved with the national team, in any capacity. The key players involved in match fixing having minted billions, with investments in stock brokerage houses, apart from involvement in cricket betting. It is time to eradicate this curse, so that cricket once again becomes a gentlemen's game.

Spin control

Nearly all of the press coverage relating to CHo Seung-hui (the terrorist who has killed over 32 innocents in Virginia, US), have referred to him as a South Korean without disclosing his US citizenship. He must be referred as a US citizen like others who have chosen US citizenship rather than referring to his native land.

The way the US media is covering the story is enough to prove that the US media is very much biased in this particular case. The US media may have shown more bias if the terrorist had been linked to a Muslim country irrespective of his religion.
