Qazi Courts: threat to national integrity

Lal (Red) Masjid, Islamabad, issue remained dominant on the political horizon of the county through out the current month.

Madarsa's female students brandishing sticks (of same size & make) attracted the attention of world media when they went on attacking a housing in their locality and kidnaped some female residents on the pretext that they were running a private brothel in their house.

Later on a footage was released on a private TV channel in which the girl students of the madarsa were shown exhibiting lethal weapons like AK-47 assault rifles etc.

The controversy went on to its peak when at last the seminary students announced the setting up of 'Qazi Court' (first of its kind all over the country) and challenged the government if they ever ventured to make use of force against them then the thousands of students of the seminary  would carry out suicide attacks and make the country a living hell on earth.

Considering the pros and cons of the possible action the government mainly adhered to its policy of resolving the issue with a dialogue. The damage caused to government's writ in the aftermath of Lal mosque episode was not made the issue of ego. Government sent its special negotiator Ch. Shujat Hussain who went and held series of talks with the leaders of the mosque & came with some results.

If it is seen in the broader national interests, the issue has not settled yet. The Mullahs all around the country probably had got negative message of Islamabad's lal mosque episode & they are gaining ground to simulate the action in their respective areas. Before any worse could happen the government should take concrete measures to thwart their ugly designs.

Because we believe if the 'Qazi Courts' started taking place in the left and right of the country  on the identical pattern of one at Islamabad, there exists a high risk that each of the 'Qazi Court' could start proclaiming 'Sharia' of its 'choice' at the total expense of our national integrity and solidarity. We appeal to government on this fora to please remain alive on this issue and take it accordingly.
