Sindh Graduate Association:
3-decade community service at a glance

Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai Community Centre, Islamabad, is a project of Sindh Graduate's Association (SGA). This is the first ever project of its kind being executed by any NGO in Pakistan. Here it is pertinent to introduce SGA which first visualised and is now executing this project.

Sindh Graduate's Association was created in the city of Karachi in the 1971 with humble ideals of peace, progress, welfare, education and national identity and with passage of time crystallised into one of the major and prestigious Development NGO's of the country.

What makes it distinct from other NGO's is that, all its workers, members and office bearers are civil servants, intellectuals, poets, writers and teachers; who are strongly committed to their soil and its culture, social work, education, tolerance and secular ideals. They are elected through regularly held elections. Other process of distinctive characteristics of SGA are that its Office bearers Chairperson, Secretary, Members of Central Executive as well as office bearers in branches are all voluntary and unpaid.

During its formative years, SGA was a Welfare oriented organisation. Later on it amalgamated welfare with development a goal which is still the objective of this NGO.

The Sindh Graduate's Association has a chain of Roshan Tara Schools in various towns and cities of Sindh. These are co-educational and desegregated in nature where, unlike past practices, the majority of teachers comprise of women. The fee is affordable for lower middle class. English alongwith Sindhi is taught from the beginning.

The SGA operates Junta Clinics (clinics held on Friday) in remote areas where Medical Services are almost non-existent. It operates ambulance services in several towns. It has mobilised doctors in major hospitals and medical schools in Karachi and other cities to set-up voluntary medical camps in villages during normal times as well as during calamities such as rains and floods etc.

Its income generating programmes include various vocational training institutes; Women's vocational centre at Dadu is one such programmes of SGA.

None of these programmes are free. Beneficiaries are motivated to participate and share the cost ranging from Rs. 5/- in the health sector to Rs. 757- in education.

The amount is affordable and beneficiaries take pride in availing these services as partners.

With head office in Karachi SGA has over 7000 members and 55 branches, including a branch in the Federal Capital, Islamabad. The Islamabad branch, with active support from the central body has embarked upon an ambitious programme of establishing a community centre named after Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai, immortal mystic poet of Sindh.

The Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai Community Centre is being constructed on a plot measuring 5310 S/yards, in sector H-8, near Allama labal Open University and Edhi Centre. It is a multipurpose complex with several functions in view.

Auditorium
The auditorium has a capacity for 500 people, and is one of the specious auditoriums in Islamabad.

Who can use the Auditorium
The auditorium will be available for social, cultural and all such non-political functions and activities. The preference will be given to NGO's operating in Human Rights, Child Development, Education, Environment and Women uplift activities.

Library and Resource Centre
The Library and the Resource Centre will have books on varied topics with special emphasis on Sindh and its development. The Resource Centre will have data on district profiles, human right, gender issues, education and other social, cultural and economic issues. The Resource Centre is visualised to be a clearing house of data on Sindh in particular and all provinces of Pakistan in general.

Since the Centre derives its name from the great mystic poet, Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai it will have all books written on him. The poet talked of peace, tranquillity, romance, tolerance, high ideals of Islam and as a whole his work could be taken to be a message of Universal Oneness. The Centre by following the teachings of the great poet is visualised to be a centre for peace and research.

Hostel for women
A hostel to be exclusively used by working' women or unemployed women in search of a job or who visit Islamabad for short duration. However, the hostel is envisaged for women from intelligentsia. Women from rural areas will always be welcomed.

Display Centre
The display centre will have gallery of exhibits from Sindh. A small but thematic museum will provide a bird's eye view of Sindh's history and culture beginning from pre-historic times to the present.

The Centre will also have an Ambulance Service, Dispensary and a Doctor. Club facilities, Vocational Training facilities and a Community Hall for 300 persons will be available on rent. The Complex will be synthesis of local as well as contemporary architecture and decor and display.

SGA appeals to sponsors and funding agencies to support the community centre to its completion. Support can be in serval areas; financial, technical, A.V. equipments, vehicles, books, etc. The support can be acknowledged with a permanent plaque "friends of the Centre" at the main entrance of the building.

The Community Centre is visualised to be a hub of intellectual activities contributing to human development.
